Local practice notes

The Halifax Justice Centre handles the largest family-court volume in Nova Scotia, covering all of Halifax Regional Municipality. Supreme Court (Family Division) judges hear divorce, parenting, support, and property matters. The Family Law Information Program (FLIP) is required for most contested parenting cases before they proceed to a contested hearing. Self-rep volume is high; judges are accustomed to walking parties through procedure.

Duty counsel

Nova Scotia Legal Aid duty counsel for low-income parents — book in advance via the Halifax intake office.
